Magazine: A new premium winefamily

It was three years ago that a team of young experts started a new type of work at Canter Wine House (Badacsonyi Pincegazdaság’s successor). Chief winemaker Gergő Gelencsér told our magazine that their winery is one of the most modern winemaking facilities in Europe. Some of their guests said they had only seen similar production facilities in Australia. Canter Wine House is growing grapes on 112 hectares (Somló – 60ha, Tihany – 24ha, Dörgicse – 28ha). The new team started changing the winery’s product portfolio with great determination. It was about time as well: its 45 products were below par in terms of both quality and design, not to mention their mistaken price positioning. First they discarded 70 percent of the old portfolio and now they offer three wine ranges with 18 varieties and 3 barrel-selected wines. Canter’s flagship wine range is the Dandelion line: light and refreshing wines made from grape varieties characteristic of the Balaton region – with a new design, 21st-century style label any New World winery would be proud of. Premium range Magnus consists of five wines and the Kővirág brand comprises barrel-selected wines. In 2013 Canter made 750,000 bottles of wine but this year they target 1 million. Canter wines have a good price-value ratio and their quality is guaranteed by the fact that each production phase is fully automated. Bottles are filled with wine at the best moment of the fermentation process. Mr Gelencsér added that the team is full of professionals and he manages work in the winery like it was one big family. Canter’s marketing efforts form part of a conscious strategy; they have already established a network of relationships in the retail sector and their plans include building a wine shop right next to the cellar by 2015.
